Fast and Economical Machining of Structural Components

SW introduces the BF 12-21D machine tool, which is particularly suited for the large-scale production of vehicle body and chassis components.

Thanks to two spindles with independent three-axis units, the BF 12-21D is also suitable for production lines with high manufacturing volumes.

Schwäbische Werkzeugmaschinen GmbH (SW) has launched a cost-efficient and dynamic solution for the machining of structural components: the new BF 12-21D machining center. Optimized for the current automotive trend toward die-cast aluminum body parts, the BF 12-21D machining center is particularly suited for the large-scale production of vehicle body and chassis components.

The cost-efficient and dynamic BF 12-21D is intended particularly for use in automotive structural components.

“Die-cast aluminum parts are being used more and more frequently in vehicle body construction,” explains Michael Kreuzberger, Product Manager at SW. “Manufacturing accuracy plays a less important role for such workpieces than for parts like gearbox or stator housings – but producing them economically is all the more important.” The BF 12-21D, which SW presented live for the first time at EMO 2025, is the company’s response to this trend. Thanks to a new machine concept, the BF 12-21D represents a more cost-efficient solution for applications with higher manufacturing tolerances.

Speed Meets Economy

The BF 12-21D is built on a new and distinct machine platform compared to other SW models. It features a hybrid drive system, in which the X and Z axes are driven by linear motors, while the Y axis is driven by ball screws. The drives achieve a maximum dynamic speed of up to 120 m/min rapid traverse and 20 m/s² acceleration. The machine maintains the same high productivity as other SW systems. Thanks to its two spindles with independent three-axis units, it meets the demands of production lines with high manufacturing volumes.

“As a twin-spindle machine, the BF 12-21D ultimately functions like two machines in one,” emphasizes Michael Kreuzberger. “In terms of performance, it replaces two conventional single-spindle machines – but only requires one set of machine peripherals, i.e., only one control system, one control cabinet, one hydraulic unit, one cooling lubricant system, and so on. It can thus achieve a significantly higher output with a smaller footprint.”

Maximum Productivity

Both spindles have their own tool magazine and operate in separate working areas but can also work together in one working area. During automated component changeover in one working area, the second spindle can provide support in the other area. This quasi-parallel loading during main processing time further increases productivity. Standardized communication interfaces for automation and MES systems, along with an integrated tablet, allow easy status monitoring and remote access, maximizing machine availability.

Trade Fair Feedback Confirms Demand

The BF 12-21D is primarily intended for use in the automotive sector. Demand for such solutions was clearly evident at EMO 2025, where the machine made its first appearance. “The impressions we gained at the trade fair confirmed that the need for economical solutions is currently particularly high in the automotive market,” says Michael Kreuzberger. “We are meeting this demand with the BF 12-21D – without companies having to accept any loss in dynamics or productivity.”
