STLE Report Identifies Four Key Forces Shaping the Future of Lubrication and Tribology

Published every three years, the Report on Emerging Issues and Trends in Tribology and Lubrication Engineering examines AI, manufacturing, thermal management and decarbonization.
Artificial intelligence in tribology research for STLE members

The Society of Tribologists and Lubrication Engineers (STLE) — the premier technical society serving the needs of the tribology and lubrication engineering business sector — is pleased to announce the release of its 2026 STLE Emerging Trends Report on Issues and Trends in Tribology and Lubrication Engineering, available for download here

Published every three years, the STLE Emerging Trends Report surveys the forces reshaping how lubricants are developed and applied across industry. The 2026 report examines four major trends:

  • Artificial Intelligence (AI) — From FAIR data practices that bridge raw R&D with AI-powered discovery, to robotic tribometers capable of running 432 experiments in 24 hours, and nanoparticle megalibraries screening 150 million materials on a single chip, AI is beginning to fundamentally reshape how tribological research is conducted.
  • Manufacturing — The “Industry 4.0 Flywheel” concept demonstrates how AI-driven continuous improvement can move manufacturers from reactive problem-solving to proactive optimization. The report also covers real-time oil condition monitoring and the growing use of water-based lubricants in precision cold forming operations.
  • Thermal Management — Direct immersion cooling is emerging as a critical lubricant application for both EV battery packs and data centers. The report also addresses compressor lubricant challenges, varnish formation, and the role of metalworking fluids in heat dissipation.
  • Decarbonization — The report examines renewable base stocks, glycerol-based lubricants performing in forestry, agriculture and hydropower applications, oil life extension through additive replenishment, and the new lubricant formulation challenges posed by hydrogen and ammonia as alternative fuels.

The 2026 Report on Emerging Issues and Trends in Tribology and Lubrication Engineering is available free to STLE members and available for purchase by non-members for $20 here.
