A look at some of the latest machine safeguarding and personal protective equipment.

New Lockout/Tagout Compliance Resources

Brady Corporation has developed a variety of lockout/tagout resources, including a new Lockout Solutions handbook, a dedicated web area, a new solutions-planning white paper, interactive on-line webinars, and products and services to provide companies with complete lockout/tagout information and solutions.

The new 16-page "Complete LOTO Solutions" handbook is a how-to guide that lays out a straightforward "4-Steps to Compliance" plan for creating an effective energy control program. Each step includes an explanation of OSHA's basic requirements, and provides information on the related resources Brady has available for successful implementation of your LOTO program. Brady professionals will even come to your facility if desired to develop machine-specific graphical lockout procedures for your site.

A dedicated area of its public website, www.bradyid.com/lockouttagout, features a wealth of information on lockout/tagout procedures and related concerns. The site offers easy-to-find information about the many issues surrounding OSHA compliance and ways to ensure safe, efficient lockout/tagout operations. The site includes the following information to help companies develop and implement effective lockout/tagout programs:

  • ?"4-Steps to Compliance" educational format
    • °Lockout Procedure Development
    • °Energy Isolation Point Identification
    • °Lockout Tools & Warning Device Selection
    • °Employee Training & Awareness
  • ?Consultation & Training Information
  • ?Information on OSHA Compliance and Standards
  • ?Lockout Device Demo Videos

Additional resources including white papers and webinars related to lockout/tagout have been developed by Brady to provide valuable training tools and reference materials. You can download these and register for one of the free webinars on Brady's lockout/tagout website.

Multiple-Use Earplugs Enhance Communication and Worker Safety

Designed to keep workers connected to their environment without compromising protection, Howard Leight's new Clarity® multiple-use earplugs improve worker safety and communication by blocking hazardous noise while allowing voice and signal frequencies to be heard more naturally.

Utilizing Bilsom® Technology's patented Sound Management Technology? (SMT), the Clarity earplug delivers uniform attenuation that blocks low and medium frequency noise while enhancing the perception of higher voice and warning signal frequencies without distortion.

Designed for long-term comfort, Clarity incorporates a multi-material design and translucent stem with an SMT membrane to regulate the transmission of sound frequencies through the earplug and ear canal. Its FlexiFirm? core facilitates insertion, and a quadruple SoftFlange® seal helps ensure proper fit. Clarity's low NRR of 21 dB provides ideal attenuation for workers exposed to low levels of hazardous noise, and minimizes the risk of overprotection in marginal noise environments.

Clarity is available in two sizes – regular and small – to accommodate a wide range of ear canal shapes and sizes. A corded version also includes an exclusive attached Cord Adjuster that allows workers to adjust the woven cord's length to their personal preference or application requirements. Clarity earplugs are ideal for transportation workers, light manufacturing, warehousing, laboratories, food processing, and other work environments with low levels of hazardous or nuisance noise.

Safety Mat System with Quick Disconnect

A safety mat system offers freedom, flexibility, and reduced operator fatigue when compared with traditional guarding methods such as interlocked fences, pullback restraints or perimeter barriers. Full visibility of and access to the work area is maintained.

Omron Scientific Technologies, Inc. introduces UMQ Series Safety Mats with a patented IP67 quick-disconnect cable connector that promises significant cost savings by reducing inventory requirements and simplifying installation and replacement of damaged cables.

The quick-disconnect feature allows last-minute cable length changes in the field. Since the cable is not attached until the end of the installation process, the potential for cable damage during installation reduces significantly. If a cable is damaged during installation or mat operation, it can simply be replaced in the field without having to replace an entire mat. The quick-disconnect is designed for backward compatibility with the mat cable location of current Omron STI safety mats.

Black UMQ series safety mats are available in standard sizes with a standardized cable location. Mat cables are currently available in 5 m and 10 m lengths, metric sizes, yellow color for greater visibility, special angular and cut outs for uniquely shaped areas and customized cable locations. All Omron STI safety mats are engineered to satisfy ANSI/RIA R15.06-1999, ISO 13856-1:2001, ANSI B11.19-2003, CSA Z432-04 and EN1760-1:1998 standards.

The safety mat is a simple, normally open switch. When a specified minimum weight is applied to the safety mat the "switch" closes. This sends a signal to the safety mat controller, which in turn, sends a stop signal to the guarded machine. Each safety mat presents four wires to the safety mat controller. This provides the redundancy required to monitor the wires for open circuits due to incorrect wiring or physical damage to the safety mat wires.

Safety mats can also simplify routine tasks such as machine set-up, maintenance and repair. Typical applications for safety mats include welding robots, assembly machinery, material handling, packaging machinery, punches, presses and robotic work cells.

Lateral Impact Head Protection

North Safety Products' Fibre-Metal SUPEREIGHT® SE2 Sensor caps offer multi-directional protection by providing a dual impact energy control system that senses the point of impact and activates the appropriate force attenuation system.

A blow to the crown activates the SUPEREIGHT crown impact system. A lateral blow to the sides, front or rear of the cap activates the patented attenuator band which provides protection for the periphery of the cap. SUPEREIGHT Sensor meets the ANSI Z89.1 Type II standard. Fibre-Metal ships all of their hard hats fully assembled – see the difference quality makes.
