Portable Four-Speed Magnetic Drill for Demanding Holemaking Jobs

The power-to-weight ratio of the new HMD934 portable magnetic drill from Hougen can drill holes up to 4 in deep in steel, with diameters up to 3-1/16 in.
Booth C-21021: The mag drill pilot light on the HMD934 portable magnetic drill is a LED light built into the base of the magnet that allows the operator to efficiently and quickly line up the pilot with the hole’s center location in all lighting conditions. A guide rail feed system maximizes cutter stability and rigidity. A proprietary high torque two-speed Hougen motor powers the drill. The two speeds along with interchangeable gears give the drill four speeds to help maximize tool life and increase torque when using large diameter cutters.

In Booth C-21021, Hougen Manufacturing, Inc. (Swartz Creek, MI), a manufacturer of magnetic drills, annular cutters and accessories, will showcase a new model of portable magnetic drill, the HMD934. This new model offers increased power and performance for demanding holemaking in serve industrial applications. Its power-to-weight ratio gives metal fabricators more strength and torque to drill large, deep holes in steel. Even with the ability to drill holes up to 4 in deep and diameters up to 3-1/16 in, the drill is portable and compact in size.

The HMD934 has a number of features and innovations that provide convenience and ease of use for the operator. The mag drill pilot light is a LED light built into the base of the magnet that allows the operator to efficiently and quickly line up the pilot with the hole’s center location in all lighting conditions. A guide rail feed system maximizes cutter stability and rigidity. Powering the drill is a proprietary high torque two-speed Hougen motor. The two speeds along with interchangeable gears give the drill four speeds which help maximize tool life and increase torque when using large diameter cutters. Magnet holding power is increased with the use of impactor points and the two stage magnet which further increases magnetic holding power by 30 percent when the drill motor is turned on. This also saves energy and increases magnet life.

The HMD934 has many additional features designed for ease of use: an integrated coolant bottle which is conveniently located and does not add to the width of the drill; a robust housing design with an ergonomic carrying handles; and a ring on the back of the magnet for quickly attaching the safety chain. An adjustable depth pilot and positive slug ejection ensures the slug is ejected when the feed handles are reversed. An optional pressurized coolant system is available to provide additional coolant volume and better flow for deep hole drilling. The drill weighs 72 lb, measures 26-1/4 in H x 10 in W x 17-3/4 in L and provides drilling capacities from 5/8 in up to 3-1/16 in diameter and 4 in depth of cut using Hougen’s 12,000-Series annular cutters. The drill has an electrical rating of 13.5A and provides 70/120/200/332 rpm.

For safety, the HMD934 incorporates a no-adjustment safety switch that shuts down the drill motor if lift of the magnetic base is detected. An LED indicator monitors this sensor and alerts if the switch is not engaged. A two stage power on switch prevents drill rotation unless the magnet has first been engaged, and, in the case of a power interruption, safety circuitry will keep the drill motor off after power is restored until the start button is manually depressed.
