The National Tooling and Machining Association is encouraging members to contact their governmental representatives to express opposition to card check legislation. On Labor Day, the American Rights at Work, a labor advocacy group, began airing television ads to press for legislation that would allow workers to organize without secret ballot elections. NTMA opposes card check legislation because they claim it denies the right to a private ballot for American workers, replacing it with a process where workers sign cards to indicate whether they choose a union. The Coalition for a Democratic Workplace, of which NTMA is a member, has been campaigning against the legislation with its own ads in key states. Last June, the Senate blocked an effort to pass the legislation; the House approved it in March 2007. NTMA claims the labor unions have made passage of card check legislation their number one priority for Congress.
