Meerwind Windfarm Will Add Over 1,000 MW to German Energy Grid
The German North Sea will house more than 20 offshore windfarm projects that are to be constructed within the next five years. One of these is the Meerwind Offshore Windfarm Project, which is in the German Bight in the North Sea, 23 km north of the island of Helgoland.
The project has been divided into two windfarms: Meerwind Sued/Ost and Meerwind West. The company WindMW GmbH (Bremerhaven, Germany) is responsible for the planning, construction and operation of the Meerwind Sued/Ost windfarm, which will be able to feed in 400 MW to the public grid. Eighty class-type, 5 MW aero generators will be installed. Construction is expected to begin in 2012, with completion planned for the end of 2013; the Island of Helgoland will be used as a maintenance base. The company still has to choose the major equipment supply contractor.
Meerwind West, the 644 MW offshore project, is owned by Windland Energieerzeugungs GmbH (Berlin, Germany), which also participates as a 20-percent shareholder in WindMW GmbH; Blackstone (New York City, Ny) is the main shareholder with the remaining 80 percent. The windfarm will be 10 km west of the Meerwind Sued/Ost and would be equipped with 161 wind energy generators, each between 3 and 6 MW. This project has not yet been approved by the regulatory authorities.
