LARGE BORE, LONG WORK PIECE APPLICATIONS

CENTRIC International, Inc. (Chicago, IL) announces the release of Top-Turn S50 Series Slant Bed CNC Lathes to the Americas. The S50 Series lathes offer a 12 in chuck, a 25 in (367 mm) center height, a 50 in (1,275 mm) swing over bed, and travels of 26 in (622 mm) in X-axis and 78 in (1 m) to 236 in (6 m) in Z-axis.

The addition of the C-axis and Y-axis capabilities makes this machine ideal for precision turning and milling of large-sized printing rollers, straight-toothed shaft couplings, main shafts, main-shaft bearing caps, main-shaft lubricating sleeves, yokes, scrolls, cambered parts for shafts and many other large diameter, long parts.

These lathes are designed based on years of experience working with customers requiring large swing-over-bed, large bore, and long work machining. These machines can achieve low rotation speed and high-torque performance, while offering a sturdy structure to ensure high stability and precision during heavy-duty cutting. Plus, the 45 deg bed and modular sheet-metal housing offers convenient loading and unloading of super-long and oversized work pieces.

These lathes offer a standard, extra large spindle bore of Ø9 in (Ø230 mm) with larger bores available as options. It can be installed with front and rear chucks to securely fasten work pieces and decrease swaying of work pieces during rotation. The specially designed gear ratio enhances the horsepower and torsion of the spindle nine fold to reach a full 270 hp (198 kW).

Top-Turn lathes incorporate industry-leading FANUC drives, motors and controls to ensure the highest levels of reliability, quality and ease of operation, as well as being backed by FANUC's commitment to the highest standards of performance and energy savings, and GE's superior support and service.

These lathes feature a high-precision, high-rigidity 45 deg oblique bed structure enabling the machines to perform heavy-duty machining on large work pieces with ultimate steadiness and precision. The slant bed design optimized the chip removal, preventing metal chips from piling up and decreasing heat expansion of the bed. The lathes come standard with Baruffaldi brand servo turrets offering 12 tool stations, a 1.57 in (40 mm) shank height for square tools, and a tool shank diameter of 2.36 in (60 mm). Their electromechanical TB Series turrets operate using a brushless servomotor resulting in reduced indexing times, directional rotation and shockless positioning. With over 50 years of experience in the industry, Baruffaldi is one of the largest turret manufacturers for CNC machine tools.

The S50C lathes are equipped with the Baruffaldi TBMA250 VDI50 C-axis turret to enable milling, drilling and engraving on curved surfaces of long, cylindrical work pieces. This turret offers 12 tool stations with speeds up to 5,000 rpm. Working as planomillers and vertical lathes at the same time, these models can drastically save on loading and unloading time as operations can be completed in one set-up as opposed to two. This can lower processing costs, as well as increase working efficiencies and profits.

The hydraulic power tailstock is designed to meet the processing needs of long work pieces while being extremely easy to operate. The tailstock sleeve is equipped with a spindle, which can rotate along the sleeve, instead of incorporating a rotary center. The built-in hydraulic cylinder saves space and gives the machine a cleaner look, while avoiding a self-locking reaction. By selecting a hand-operated 10 in or 12 in three-jaw chuck installed on the spindle nose as an option, customers can further increase clamping force and accuracy.

As an option, the S50 lathes are also available with a magnetic drive for linear travel over 5 m long on the Z-axis. This eliminates the need for a conventional ball-screw control which has many shortcomings for applications that require large Z-axis travel. These shortcomings include slow movement and late feeding mechanism responses, as well as torsional and gravitational strain.  The magnetic drive lowers the center of gravity, increases response times, saves energy and offers very low noise.

Top-Turn lathes are manufactured in Taiwan by Jashico Machine Manufacture Co., Ltd. Top-Turn has over 25 years of experience in the manufacture of CNC lathes.
