Innovative Roughing and Drilling Techniques

Long known as a five-axis specialist CAM software product with innovative techniques for collision detection and collision control, recent innovations in hyperMILL from OPEN MIND Technologies AG, the parent company of OPEN MIND Technologies USA, Inc. (Needham, MA) appeal to both the 5-axis and broader markets, including tire mold automation, turbomachinery (single-blade and multi-blade) and cylinder head porting (tube milling).

In particular, the tire mold technology was developed in a generalized manner that allows benefits to many other aspects of hyperMILL in general manufacturing applications. A few of the recent advancements include 5-axis high performance roughing techniques and improved linking connections for drilling operations, whether 2-axis or 5-axis.

5-Axis High Performance Roughing Techniques
hyperMAXX® high-performance roughing is based on Celeritive’s Volumill™ toolpath kernel, which OPEN MIND has integrated within hyperMILL in a manner that also utilizes other intrinsic features of hyperMILL, such as collapsing boundary walls (and tracking stock material) then continuing deeper than indicated by holder collisions, multiple offset allowances for various surface groups, and also applying the high-performance technique to 5-axis roughing operations within the shape-offset methodology.

Shape-offset techniques are designed for use with general wrapped surfaces that can be defined by the bottom of a pocket and a depth used for multiple offsets. Other geometric features, boundaries, and pockets are identified automatically by the routine. Applications include engine casings, aero-structural components and tire molds.
