GrayMatter Robotics has officially opened its new 100,000-square-foot headquarters and innovation center in Carson, California. The facility represents a major milestone in the company’s mission to bring “physical AI” to American manufacturing and create the nation’s most advanced interactive robotics experience center.

A New Era of Manufacturing Automation

Located at 2226 E. 223rd Street, the Carson facility includes 25+ active robotic cells performing real manufacturing ope

rations. The site showcases GrayMatter’s advanced “physical AI” technology, which enables robots to autonomously sand, grind, polish, spray, blast, and inspect complex parts. Over 100 high-skilled jobs have been created, with hundreds more planned as the company grows.

“This facility represents more than just a headquarters — it is our commitment to bringing advanced manufacturing back to American soil and to the South Bay region specifically,” said Ariyan Kabir, CEO and co-founder. “Carson offers access to aerospace, marine, and manufacturing clusters, world-class ports, and a skilled workforce. This is where the factories of the future are being built.”

Interactive Robotics Experience

Unlike traditional corporate facilities, GrayMatter’s headquarters is a live robotics experience. Visitors can watch robots scan, self-program, and process parts they’ve never encountered before — demonstrating how AI-driven automation surpasses human precision.

“We wanted to demystify industrial robotics,” said Brual Shah, CTO and co-founder. “Our robots autonomously adapt to new parts in seconds. It’s manufacturing intelligence in real time.”

Physical AI: From Digital to Real-World Intelligence

While most AI developments focus on digital tasks, GrayMatter Robotics leads in “physical AI,” where robots interact with and manipulate the physical world. Using its proprietary GMR-AI™ platform, the system applies physics-informed models to safely handle diverse materials and shapes without manual programming.

“Physical AI operates in the real world with real consequences,” said Satyandra K. Gupta, Chief Scientist and co-founder. “It’s AI that can finish aerospace components to exacting standards — autonomously.”

This innovation earned GrayMatter Robotics recognition by Fast Company as one of 2025’s Most Innovative Companies in Robotics and Engineering.

Solving Manufacturing’s Toughest Challenge

The Carson headquarters doubles as a demonstration site for automating surface finishing in high-mix production. Traditional automation struggles with variable parts that require manual programming. GrayMatter’s systems solve this by scanning and self-programming in under a minute.

The company’s technology enables:

  • Autonomous adaptation to part variations
  • 1.5x–4x faster operations than manual methods
  • Deployment within 2–4 months, not years
  • Operation with no coding required

Pierce Manufacturing, part of Oshkosh Corporation, has already expanded deployment of these systems. “Our early results convinced us to grow the partnership,” said Bob Schulz, President of Pierce Manufacturing.

Backed by Wellington Management, which led its $45 million Series B funding, GrayMatter Robotics has secured partnerships with FANUC and 3M.

“GrayMatter combines deep AI expertise with shop-floor insight,” said Mike Cicco, CEO of FANUC America. “Their systems transform productivity and ergonomics.”

“By integrating 3M’s abrasive technologies with GrayMatter’s intelligent robots, we deliver unmatched results,” added Alejandro Martinez, President of 3M Abrasives Systems Division.

Economic and Workforce Impact

The Carson facility supports Southern California’s manufacturing renaissance through:

  • 100+ new high-skill jobs with hundreds more projected
  • Partnerships with local schools for AI and robotics training
  • Expanded opportunities for regional suppliers and contractors

“We’re not replacing workers — we’re elevating them,” said Kabir. “Physical AI creates safer, more advanced roles for American manufacturing professionals.”

Strategic Location in the South Bay

Carson’s proximity to the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, major aerospace companies, and interstate access makes it ideal for logistics and production. “The South Bay provides the infrastructure, workforce, and environment we need to scale,” said Kabir.

What’s Next for GrayMatter Robotics

Following the headquarters opening, the company plans to:

  • Extend physical AI to new manufacturing processes
  • Expand production capacity and training programs
  • Support hundreds of new manufacturing sites nationwide

“Five years ago, this was impossible,” Kabir said. “Today it’s real, and five years from now, physical AI will define modern manufacturing.”
