GOOD ALTERNATIVES TO CBN/CERAMICS IN AUTOMOTIVE TOOLING APPLICATIONS

TH1000 and TH1500 grades from Seco Tools are ideal for machining clutch discs, gear, hubs, rock drills, tool parts, bearings, shafts, wear parts, nozzles and rolls.

Seco Tools (Troy, MI) is offering high-performance Duratomic turning grades TH1000 and TH1500 for the machining of hardened steels (40Rc to 55Rc). Both grades are good alternatives where the application of CBN or ceramics may be problematic due to component, setup or machine tool stability. Easier to apply, the new TH grades allow users to reduce machining time, lower insert cost and improve chip control. Component production well suited to these grades include clutch discs, gear, hubs, rock drills, tool parts, bearings, shafts, wear parts, nozzles and rolls.

The TH1000 grade is nanolaminate PVD-coated to provide edge toughness and high chipping resistance, making it highly resilient to edge fracture while providing excellent surface finish. It can be used to machine steel components with hardened and soft areas, hardened steels components with interrupted cuts or to provide hard surface removal.

TH1500 is a Duratomic CVD-coated grade, which provides excellent heat resistance allowing it to remain in continuous cut for long machining times. It can also be an alternative grade for finish turning of cast iron.

Seco’s proprietary Duratomic process alters the surface coating at an atomic level. By realigning the crystalline structure direction, Seco has been able to create a family of coatings that are much tougher and harder than those developed through conventional techniques. Both TH grades are available in a choice of insert geometries and chipbreaker styles.
