EMUGE-FRANKEN USA Donates End Mills to Utah Tech University
EMUGE-FRANKEN USA, a leading manufacturer of high-performance end mills, taps, thread mills, drills, gages, tool holders, and standard workholding, has donated EMUGE Made in the U.S.A. TOP-Cut VAR End Mills to Utah Tech University for its Modern Machining course. The contribution reaffirms EMUGE’s commitment to growing a skilled manufacturing workforce in America.
The multi-purpose, high-performance TOP-Cut VAR End Mills represent one of the industry’s most versatile variable helix carbide tool solutions. Undergraduate engineering students gain first-hand experience using these advanced cutting tools while applying best-practice machining techniques. This hands-on training enhances critical thinking and prepares students for future roles in the manufacturing industry.
Modern Machining Course Builds Future Engineers
Utah Tech’s Modern Machining course dives into the thermodynamics, kinematics, and materials science of machining processes. The curriculum is designed to modernize machining education and inspire a new generation of machining scientists.
Andrew Schiller, Instructor in the Practice of Engineering at Utah Tech University, said, “Some of these students will go on to work in the machining industry and push the boundaries of what machining can accomplish, but their journey begins with key partners such as EMUGE, that gives students the opportunity to use world-class tools that few undergraduate students ever interact with.”

Hands-On Projects with Industry Tools
As part of a recent course project, students used EMUGE TOP-Cut VAR End Mills to machine custom titanium impellers—a challenging material and complex geometry requiring precision, thoughtful workholding, and strategic process planning. Students collaborated with EMUGE’s technical support team, referencing documentation to establish optimized cutting parameters and machining strategies.
Ultimately, the titanium impellers were featured in another class project, where students raced custom-built, electronically driven pedal boats in front of a crowd of about 900 people—showcasing how applied machining education leads to real-world results.
Continuing Collaboration for Innovation
EMUGE plans to continue its partnership with Utah Tech University engineering students to test and gather data on a new line of end mills designed specifically for machining titanium and stainless steel. This ongoing collaboration supports research-based learning while advancing precision tooling development.
