Fronius CMT Welding Process Sets New Standard for Precision, Versatility, and Control

The Cold Metal Transfer (CMT) welding process from Fronius is revolutionizing manufacturing across industries. With a unique back-and-forth wire motion, CMT achieves ultra-precise droplet detachment, minimizing heat and spatter for cleaner, stronger welds.

This low-heat input makes it ideal for delicate applications such as sheets as thin as 0.3 mm and materials sensitive to distortion. Manufacturers benefit from minimal deformation and exceptional aesthetics.

CMT also enables joining of dissimilar materials, like galvanized steel and aluminum, unlocking new possibilities in product design and production flexibility.

The Fronius development team has added valuable features to CMT for optimal 3D printing results, and combined everything in one characteristic. CMT Additive Pro impresses with its particularly even layer structure, high quality, and stability.

Proven Performance in Diverse Industries

“Over the last two decades, CMT has proven itself in a wide range of industries,” says Franziska Eichhorn, Strategic Product Manager at Fronius International. “We continue to be inspired by the innovative ways our customers use CMT to solve welding challenges.”

Automotive manufacturers use CMT for lightweight, strong connections in vehicle frames. Aerospace companies rely on it for precision welding of high-strength alloys. The electronics sector benefits from clean, controlled brazing, while additive manufacturing companies leverage CMT for advanced 3D metal printing.

Intelligent Assistance with WireSense

Precise WireSense robot assistance system: The combination of a highly sensitive and dynamic CMT drive and special software turns the welding wire into a sensor that can sense contours or air gap deviations directly on the component.

The robotic WireSense system enhances welding precision by using the CMT wire as a sensor. It detects edge positions and gaps in real time, dynamically adjusting weld placement. This ensures higher quality seams and reduces rework, material waste, and production costs.

Future-Ready Welding Technology

Fronius continues to advance CMT, developing custom welding characteristics like CMT Mix, CMT Cycle Step, CMT Braze, and CMT Cladding.

LaserHybrid CMT combines laser and CMT technology to deliver fast, high-quality welds on aluminum and high-strength steel. The latest innovation—CMT Additive Pro—is optimized for metal 3D printing, setting a new benchmark in additive manufacturing.
