Workholding Components for Tight Spaces and Irregular or Contoured Surfaces
Fairlane Products, a manufacturer of workholding and positioning components, offers the Base Design Swivot, the most compact version of its ball and pad Swivot systems. The Base Design Swivot is a modular workholding solution designed to support positioning, clamping, holding, and supporting applications across a wide range of mechanical devices.
Swivots swivel, pivot, and tilt to compensate for draft angles and irregularities in the workpiece. The ball swivels 360 degrees and tilts in multiple directions from centerline. Interchangeable components help reduce setup time and simplify changeover.
The cylindrical body allows installation in tight spaces. The housing is tapped for backside fastening, while the replaceable flat ball swivels to enable self-alignment on uneven surfaces. A Viton O-ring holds the ball in place, keeps contaminants out, and supports smooth movement. The housing is manufactured from alloy steel, heat treated to Rc 43/46, and finished with black oxide.
A typical Swivot assembly includes a replaceable ball assembly, replaceable pad, O-ring, lock screw, and housing. While the Base Design version uses a ball and pad configuration, additional housing styles are available, including hex head adjustable and threaded adjustable options. Swivots are commonly used in manual, hydraulic, and pneumatic clamping devices, as well as other workholding fixtures, where maintaining full surface contact is required to hold the workpiece in position.
The Base Design Swivot is available in a wide range of sizes and configurations. Replaceable pads are offered in high-speed steel, tool steel, non-marring Delrin, stainless steel, abrasive diamond surface, and Sof-Top urethane, in both inch and metric sizes. Pad diameters range from 5/32 in. to 1-1/2 in. and 6 mm to 24 mm. The replaceable pad design enables quick changeout when worn or when a different contact surface is needed. Replaceable balls are also available in multiple styles to meet various workholding and positioning requirements, while different housing designs provide flexible mounting options.
