A Riveting Situation: Take a look at the three high speed laser measuring and sorting systems installed by this rivet and fastener manufacturer in Barcelona.

General Inspection, LLC (Gi) (Davisburg, MI) recently installed a Gi-300 high speed laser measuring system at a small Spanish fastener manufacturer in Barcelona, Spain. This company produces a wide variety of rivets and threaded fasteners for automotive, industrial and construction markets.

The Gi-300 is an automated 100 percent laser sorting system that uses tilt head laser technology, precision narrow laser beams, multi laser velocity gauge, split laser beam and three wire modeling with true system 22 thread measuring capability. They're all used to accurately measure lengths, diameters and tapers.

The tilt head laser automatically positions itself to the appropriate angle to remove cosine error. Time saving software measures external features and easily scrolls across the screen to display every feature's details. A three wire thread modeling technique is used to measure many thread characteristics on every part. The laser optics system with its narrow/split laser beam allows accurate proportions of small non-symmetric features. And the multi-laser array accurately measures variations in the velocity of the part achieving extremely precise lengths.

The Gi-300 measures external dimensions to print, ensuring out of tolerance parts are rejected. If dimensional inspection is critical to your needs, then the Gi-300 is critical on your path to zero.

The Spanish fastener manufacturer purchased three sorting machines from Gi. The first was delivered in September 2007. Prior to installation of the new system, this company employed over 30 people to manually sort for a variety of defects. They project to save hundreds of thousands of dollars in reduced labor and charge backs from their customers.

The Gi-360 is a 3-dimensional laser measuring system with 8 lasers positioned around the circumference of the parts. The system can measure all external features to print tolerances at rates up to 600 parts per minute. Standard features the machine measures include lengths, diameters, tapers, threads and straightness. The system is also equipped with eddy-current to detect cracks and the presence of heat-treatment.

General Inspection provides turn-key systems. This particular machine has a 5 cuft bulk elevator hopper, a 24 in vibratory feeder and a 6-full and 6-empty box automatic packaging system. All automation was produced with gentle part handling.
