Welding is a trade that requires precise skill, attention to detail and accuracy. These qualities can be elevated when essential welding tools are within reach. There are 11 essential welding tools that every welder should keep near the workstation.

  1. Welding Machine

Without a welding machine, a welding station is virtually useless. Welding machines join metal parts together by melting them with heat. The type of welding machine selected depends on the job and the materials being used. The most common options include MIG welders, TIG welders and Stick welders (SMAW).

MIG welders, such as the MIG STRIKER 200 from Weldcote, are known for speed, efficiency and versatility. TIG welders are typically used on thinner metals for intricate work. Weldcote’s TIG STRIKER 200 is designed for precision and high-quality welds. Stick welders are often used outdoors on thicker materials. Weldcote offers the STRIKER 160 and STRIKER 140 for these applications.

  1. Welding Helmet

Weldcote offers many different auto-darkening helmets.

A welding helmet is one of the most essential welding tools for safety. Welding produces intense light, heat, sparks and debris. Helmets protect the eyes from ultraviolet (UV) and infrared (IR) radiation that can cause arc eye, cataracts and blindness. They also protect the skin from sparks and heat that may cause burns.

Weldcote offers auto-darkening helmets such as the SUPREMEVIEW Digital Auto-Darkening Helmet. Auto-darkening technology automatically adjusts the shade based on arc brightness, ensuring clear visibility and proper protection.

  1. Welding Gloves

Welding gloves protect against burns, cuts and abrasions. Different welding processes require different glove types.

Different types of welding machines require different types of welding gloves such as TIG Gloves and MIG Gloves. MIG gloves (pictured) are often made of cowhide or pigskin and are thicker to protect against heat and spatter, while TIG gloves are made of thinner deerskin and or goatskin that provides dexterity and precision.

TIG gloves are thinner, often made of deerskin or goatskin, providing greater dexterity and precision.

  1. Welding Pliers

Welding pliers are versatile and necessary for daily welding tasks. They are used for gripping hot metal, bending and flattening wires and performing cleaning and maintenance tasks.

The Side-Kick MIG Welding Pliers from Weldcote can handle wire cutting, spatter removal and contact tip removal.

  1. Chipping Hammer

Chipping hammers are used to inspect weld quality and create clean surfaces. The pointed end breaks up and removes slag from the weld bead as it cools. The hammer end allows minor adjustments when needed.

  1. Angle Grinder

An angle grinder is another essential welding tool. It cleans surfaces, removes slag and spatter, shapes metal and prepares edges for welding.

It’s important to keep a variety of discs on hand to tackle different tasks, including cutting discs, grinding wheels, and flap discs (pictured).

Keeping a variety of discs on hand improves efficiency. These include cutting discs, grinding wheels, flap discs, wire wheels, diamond cutting discs and stripping discs. Weldcote offers grinding wheels, cutting wheels, cutting wheels for aluminum and cut-off wheels for right angle grinders.

  1. Square/Level

A right-angle square and level help ensure proper alignment during prep work. Welding squares streamline the process by maintaining accuracy and precision. Levels help verify angle measurement and positioning.

  1. Clamps

Clamps function as an extra set of hands. They hold workpieces securely in place during welding. Common types include C-clamps, magnetic clamps, welding table clamps, locking pliers and grounding clamps.

  1. Soapstone/Marker

Soapstone and markers are used during preparation. They create heat-resistant, accurate lines for cutting, alignment and weld joint definition. Clear markings reduce welding defects and improve efficiency.

  1. Measuring Tape/Ruler

Accuracy and precision are critical in welding. Measuring tapes and rulers help ensure structures are fabricated to the correct dimensions.

  1. Magnets

When clamps cannot be used, magnets provide stability and alignment. They are especially helpful when working with awkward angles or complex shapes.

Essential welding tools go beyond the welding machine itself. From a welding helmet to a measuring tape, each item supports safety, speed and precision. Setting up a welding station intentionally with these essential welding tools ensures a safer and more efficient welding experience.
